Happy New Year!

I can hardly believe we are in the year 2012. Where did the last year go? I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas break and now feel rested and renewed.

We will be again having the Variety Show, Friday, February 3rd, during Catholic Schools Week...that is just around the corner...so...I am asking for any students who are interested in sharing their talents to sign up. There is a sign-up sheet available in the computer lab and in the library.

Our Cheerleader lock-in will be on Friday, January 27th from after school until 10am the next morning. Letters went home...I will send permission forms home this week. Each Cheerleader is asked to bring a snack to share. I will provide pizza for dinner Friday night. It will be fun...

Please remember to return the Cheerleading uniforms clean and on hangers with your cheerleaders name on them...they will be then ready for pictures...I will let you know the date as soon as I know.

One more game for this basketball season and our Cheerleaders will be done for the year! They have been outstanding...I am very proud of each of "my girls" this year for all their hard work and dedication. Thank you parents also for your continued support to your "cheerleader" and to the OLL Team. Our Last game is Parent's Night...this is where we thank our parents for their dedication and hard work...it is Friday, December 16.

We have been reading Christmas stories during Library time...I think we will also try and fit a Christmas movie in too if we have extra time. All the grades have been working on different levels of the Dewey Decimal System...Kindergarten thru 2nd grade have been working on the different parts of the book and what we call them.

Computer lab has been a buzz with Writer bios, clip art, Microsoft word, and power point! Have a very Safe and Happy Christmas!

Hello and Happy Fall!

These past few weeks have been wonderful as I have returned back to school after a 3 week recovery. I sure missed my students very much...thank you by the way students for all the prayers and beautiful & thoughtful cards to help speed my recovery.

Our Cheerleaders traveled to their first game...all the way to Maple...to support our wonderful Bruin basketball players. The girls have been practicing like crazy to get ready for the season. We will be travelling to several games this year including Ashland Middle School on Tuesday, November 8th and Drummond on Tuesday, November 15.

We are looking for fundraising ideas and donations for new cheerleading uniforms...let me know if you are interested in heading up a fundraiser or have donations.

Library and Computer lab continue to be busy places during the day. Our students have been working on "Dewey", book reports, and more during Library time.

Our wonderful Scholastic Book Fair will be in our Library November 14th through the 20th. If you are interested in volunteering please let me know!

The Book Fair hours are:

Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Saturday, 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, 8 a.m. - Noon

In computers our Kindergarten have been learning mouse control and how to properly turn on and off the computer.
1st graders have learned how to set up their own avitar.
2nd grade and 3rd grade have been working on home row and Thanksgiving reports.
4th grade has been working with Microsoft word and learning paragraphing.
5th grade and jr high have been working on keyboarding, Microsoft word and Internet research.

Welcome Back!

A new school year has begun. Students are excited about sharing their summer adventures and are eager to begin the new year in their new classrooms.

Just as a reminder...every student needs headphones, a zip lock bag with their name on it to keep them in. These will remain in the computer lab through out the year. Review is the name of the game for computers. It will be interesting to see what they remember from last year.

The library has been re-arranged and looks a little bigger. We have a good selection of new books to add to our shelves this year. Thank you so much to those who donated or purchased books for our library. I want to give a special thanks to the Bargin Hut here in Ashland. This summer they collected new and gently used hard cover books and donated them to our OLL library...they are awesome...

Cheerleading practice will start next week. I hope you will join us at the basketball games this year and help us cheer on our team.

We are selecting our fall play for Drama Club...looks like our production will be mid November, before Thanksgiving break...I will let you know the exact date soon!

Hola,

Bruin Drama Club practice is underway! We have selected 4 One Act Plays. It is always exciting to see how we develop from a script read through to the actual on stage performance!

April 29th is just around the bend and the OLL Cheerleaders have been invited to join the in on the fun for the Bruins Sports Banquet. Each family is asked to bring a dish to pass!

Poetry was on the menu in the month of April in the Library...as well as Easter, and "The Dewey".

In computers we have all been practicing the keyboard. We are using several wonderful educational sites on the WWW and Internet research has been the hot topic of the month along with PowerPoint.

We are nearing the end of March...The time is sure flying by. We will be starting play practice very soon. Our spring play will be performed on Friday evening, May 20th. I will post more information on Drama Club happenings later on.

The Library has been abuzz with story time for preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade. I do try and teach them new words in sign language each week and a little Spanish as well.

4th grade finished up their biographies wonderfully with a presentation. They dressed in costume of the person they researched and delivered it as that person. How wonderful and creative!

In junior high, we have been studying hard in the computer lab. PowerPoint presentations, for 5th and 6th grade, and plagiarism and citing sources in 7th and 8th grades.

Winter Greetings,

We had a very successful Variety Show on Friday, February 5th. Thanks to all the students and staff that participated and thanks to the student body, staff and family who attended to watch the show and cheer everyone on!

We have been very busy in the Computer Lab. Every class continues to practice typing.

Junior High finished their introduction to HTML basics. It was challenging, but they made it through! They know how to write the script for a web page using html. Job well done!

We have been working on power point and Microsoft word as well in other classes. The 5th grader are working on a power point presentation on a variety of subjects from Cats to William Shakespeare! the 6th graders are putting together a 10 slide power point presentation on their favorite recipe.

Library

I love to see our students read! Preschool visits the Library weekly for a story. Kindergarten and 1st grade love to hear a story and then do an activity relating to the story. The 2nd graders and 3rd graders are studying the basics of Dewey, practicing and learning to understand the fiction section of our Library.

Our 4th graders have been working on biographies. Each student selected a biography book from our Library to read. They also are researching on line during Computer class to find interesting information on their person. On February 15th they will begin to present their 3-5 minute presentation on their biography, dressed as their "person". It will be fun!

Please remember to return Library books on time! I will be getting overdue notices out next week.

Hello everyone!

Our school variety show for Catholic Schools Week is just around the corner. We have a few students signed up already. They can perform solo or in groups. We are looking for any talent they may want to share like:

Singing
Dancing
Whistling
Comedy
Short skit
Playing an instrument
Impersonations
Reading a poem
Working with puppets
Ventriloquist
How to make cookie dough!
Or anything else their creative minds can come up with.

All acts must be rated “G” of course, so please help them, especially if they choose to sing a current pop song, to make sure the material is appropriate. Each group or solo should practice at home and be stage ready for the performance. It is for fun, not a competition.

Practices are this Friday...Monday and Tuesday of next week if needed....There is still time for your eager little star to join in on the fun!

Greetings!

So many wonderful things to talk about and so little time! The Bruins Cheerleaders ended their season with their group and individual pictures taken in the gym...my are they lovely! We will be having a lock-in sometime in January and this will also be final uniform turn in.

The Drama Club gave two amazing performances of "A Christmas Carol" on Friday, December 17th. Our first performance was in the morning before the entire student body and staff. They were a little nervous but did very well. Our second and final performance was that evening before a packed audience. I am so proud of each and everyone of my drama students. They studied their parts and gave up their recess to practice our play.

A special thank you to all who helped after the play with taking down the set and delivering many items back to the theatre. It really meant so much!

The Library has been abuzz with reading, checking out books, crafts, origami, learning the Dewy system, Drama Club practice, and of course the excitement of Christmas.

Computer classes continue to learn the keyboard and typing skills at appropriate stages for each grade level.

Kindergarten and 1st grade are much improved with mouse control, accessing Internet explorer, correctly turning on and off the computer, and finding and navigating sites.
2nd grade is mastering the home row and continues to find the other keys with ease. They are learning Microsoft Word and proper and safe Internet use.
3rd and 4th grade now understands the placement of the keyboard and are typing with a little more skill. They have come along way in Word. They have also learned the art of downloading items from the Internet. The 4th graders, in addition, are creating files and saving their work.
5th grade is working hard on computer vocabulary and research.
Junior High have been working on projects including, state research, letters to governors, important figures in the history of computers, HTML and much more.

I continue to be pleasantly amazed at how wonderful the students are here at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School and thank the dear Lord above for being so blessed and lucky to be a staff member here.

Happy Halloween!

We have been reading stories about Halloween and Fall this month in the Library. Our little creative goblins have been busy drawing and coloring pictures about this season. I so enjoy our story times. The children are wonderful listeners when I am reading a good book to them!

The computer lab has been abuzz with the sound of clicking "mice" and the tapping of "keys", as we continue our work on keyboarding, word, power point, and Internet studies. The students are all usually rewarded a 15 minute free period at the end of each class when time allows. So they really try and stay focused during Lab time.

Our Bruins Drama Club will hold the first meeting and audition Tuesday, October 26th during each lunch break in the Library. This way each student will have a chance to sign up, try-out, and grab lunch. After their lunch time they will head to the Library instead of recess that day.

Our 2010 Cheerleading Team has been hard at work learning a number of cheers. They have been given packets of information to read along with their parents. Please turn in the signed forms as soon as possible. Uniforms will be given out at Monday's practice(October 25th)...to those girls who have turned in their signed forms.

Our first home game is on November 4th. The game begins at 6pm. Cheerleaders should be there by 4:30 pm to practice in the gym. I encourage and invite everyone to watch the game and support the Team.

Hello!

As we head into fall, the Library will transform into a Halloween theme. The students are learning the Dewey system. It is a progression that they will keep learning and I am sure that some of us as adults are still learning about today!

The younger students are learning about taking care of books and how to choose books they can enjoy. Grades 2 and 3 are learning to understand the basics of Dewey and some library vocabulary. Grade 4 is studying biography/autobiography, fiction/non-fiction, article/periodical, almanac/atlas, and more. Jr. High will be soon choosing books to read to preschool and kindergarten.

In computer lab the Kindergarten and 1st graders are hard practicing with their mouse skills and learning the parts of the computer. 2nd graders are studying the keyboard and learning Internet safety basics. 3rd and 4th grades are working in detail with Microsoft Word. Jr. High has been busy on internet research at different levels.

Greetings!

Another school year has begun and the students here at Our Lady seem eager to learn!

There have been some wonderful changes in the Library. This summer the old storage closet was transformed into a wonderful open office with built in desk. Thanks so much to Dave B. for such amazing work! Mr. Bell spent a lot of time in moving books about the library so we could rearrange. I am very thankful for all their hard work!

I am looking forward to working with all the returning and new students this year. We will be a busy group as we continue to learn how to use the Library, continue typing lessons, and explore the world of computers.

Dates to look forward to this year will be November 10-19 as we welcome the Scholastic Book Fair back to the Library!

I have been cleaning, reorganizing and pulling outdated material in the library. It will be ongoing through out the rest of the year. We are working on updating the library with new books. We really need biographies and many of the non-fiction categories and of course interesting fiction and fiction series books. If you have books, new or in good used condition, please feel free to drop them off in the office or school library.
Each class is reading something be it a book, magazine, handouts and assignments or games of knowledge.
I am working with teachers so that library and computer time can be used to work on lessons or research. The 5th grade has been working hard on Biographies. They completed them and are moving on to study Lewis and Clark this week.
Kindergarten through Third grades have enjoyed stories, coloring, and sign language. Ask them what they learned to say with their hands!
Fourth grade has been studying library usage. We enjoyed learning about airplanes and their history. We made paper airplanes and had a race to see who's design could fly higher and farther. Congratulations to Madelyn, Ashley and Mathew as the top three. We will continue our talk and study of famous aviators.
Sixth through Eighth grades are learning proper library usage and indulging in the game cranium. I encourage everyone to use the library to enhance their classes.
January has also been a celebration and look into the life of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.

In computers I am getting to know what they know as well as what they do not know. I have found basic keyboarding techniques are needed. The school has in place the Type to Learn system for each class. In addition to this, I am giving them extra keyboarding drills to enhance their use of the computer.
In addition to this we are learning the following:

Kindergarten: Turning on the computer and proper shut down, basic terms such as monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse. They are working with penguin paint for mouse control by drawing and writing. I will be introducing them to simple programs and continuing with computer knowledge.
First and Second grades: They are learning computer terms and how the computer components work, mouse control, home row, internet usage and safe sites and using educational sites to enhance computer skills such as abcya.
Third and Fourth grades: They are studying terms, input and output devices, internet usage and safe sites. We have been using the site abcya for fun exercises in keyboarding, mouse control, creating with computers as well as looking for sites using search engines and the address bar.
Fifth grade: has been using and learning Word and researching sites for information on their Biographies. They will move on to Lewis and Clark.
Sixth, Seventh, and Eights grades: They have been studying advanced keyboard lessons, perfecting the use of programs such as Word, researching on the internet, the use of search engines, bibliographies for internet research, proper sites for educational use, creating folders and saving their work to their own folders.

Every class are using the type to learn and have had studies and done research on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There is much to learn and much to look forward to in the Computer Lab.

HI!

My name is Renee and I am new in Library and Computers here at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School. I am so excited to learn the names of all the students and find out just what they know and need to learn during our library and computer time. This month we have been studying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The classes have been doing research in computers and in library as well. We have also been hard at work learning and reviewing computer basics.
